Bucknell Wood

As with Hazelborough wood, Bucknell Wood was part of the wider Whittlewood forest that covers the area around Silverstone and further up to the village of Abthorpe. You can find it by cutting through Silverstone village by the Crofts Store opposite the White horse pub.Follow the road out of the village passing the sports fields on the right and around a mile or so, the car park is on the left in the dip in the road.
Another wood that is a pleasant walk although can be extremely muddy in the winter albeit off piste.
The small carpark is adequate but there is the option of parking just up the road off the Abthorpe road. Follow the signposted byway and parking is along the byway itself.
From the main carpark you can walk left ,right or straight up the main track.Going straight up and following this rigidly will do a simple loop and will take 40mins or so. This is the main drag and you are pretty much nailed on to see lots of dog walkers. If bumping into other walkers is not your thing and you want solitude, then turn right and follow the narrow track all the way around. You can walk the entire outer perimeter which can take a couple of hours. This is best done with someone who knows the wood as it can be tricky knowing where to go.This side of the wood has extensive bluebell cover and is certainly best done in spring or summer as this particular area is horrible in the winter.
There are endless tracks here and slap bang in the centre of the wood there is a star shaped array which you can see on Google maps(other services are available) .From here you can head off five different ways which head out straight before picking up the perimeter.
Bucknell wood is home to the Wood White butterfly which is very rare and you may come across the odd person looking slightly dubious but of course fairly harmless.I don't know how they would take a gaggle of gingers? Not too well I suspect. You are also likely to come across Roe deer and Muntjac just as you don't expect to see one.The area is popular with horse riders but in wet winters , they are banned due to the damage to the rides and you need to be aware on frosts and hot weather where you can easily turn an ankle.
Next to the carpark is a pond with running water so the dogs can be cleaned off.
